LiMain in action: offshore crane remotely controlled live from Rostock
Offshore maintenance is both technically demanding and logistically complex – a challenge for operators worldwide. At a networking event in Rostock, a distinguished audience had the opportunity to experience the Liebherr solution firsthand.
Liebherr-Rostock welcomed a large number of customers from the oil, gas, and offshore wind industries at the end of May 2025. Liebherr’s own remote maintenance system, Liebherr Intelligent Maintenance LiMain, was used in action during a live demonstration. The RL 2600 offshore crane, which is located on a platform in the middle of the North Sea, was precisely remote-controlled from the control station in Rostock.
Remote maintenance becomes reality
The Liebherr Remote Control System (LiReCon), which enables reliable remote operation of the crane located over 600 km away, was used for the demonstration. Afterwards, the expert audience had the opportunity to test the system themselves and experience its user-friendliness firsthand.
During a tour of the test bed, the participants had the opportunity to step onto several offshore cranes from the RL series and gained fascinating insights into current developments and technologies.
The event provided attendees with a valuable platform for interdisciplinary exchange, which was enriched by a variety of guest lectures. The ambition to operate offshore platforms unmanned and the requirements that must be met to achieve this were discussed. Cybersecurity was also a key aspect: as part of critical infrastructure, offshore platforms present potential attack surfaces that need to be protected by modern security concepts. The cross-industry exchange opened new perspectives for future collaboration.
