- Liebherr railroad excavator A 922 Rail and A 924 Rail at booth B-421/B-422 at the 29th International Exhibition for Track Technology (IAF) from May 20 to 22 ,2025, in Münster (Germany)
- Can be operated either on road or rail
- Decades of experience in developing and producing railroad excavators
- Numerous Liebherr attachments and quick coupling systems as supplement to the multifunctional machines
Liebherr will be showcasing its railroad excavators A 922 Rail and A 924 Rail at the 29th International Track Technology Exhibition (IAF) 2025 at booth B-421/B-422. The machines are used both on railway tracks and in road construction and can be quickly relocated thanks to their mobile undercarriage. A rail travel drive is mounted on both sides of the undercarriage. When entering the rails, the rail travel drive lifts the tyres to rail height. The inside wheels of the dual tyres ensure travel of the excavator on the tracks.
With the A 922 Rail and the A 924 Rail, Liebherr is offering the perfect overall package: the basic machine, the rail travel drive, the quick coupler system, attachments and all of the safety systems are developed by Liebherr and perfectly customised for the machine. Liebherr has been developing and producing railroad excavators for rail construction since 1967 and is global market leader in this segment as an OEM manufacturer.
Flexible use on road and rail: the Liebherr A 922 Rail and A 924 Rail
Liebherr railroad excavators impress with their performance: With a 120 kW / 163 hp engine, the machines achieve high working speeds with the usual smooth working movements. The innovative hydraulics concept includes a Liebherr variable displacement double pump with independent regulating circuits. Powerful hydraulic attachments can thus be operated independently of the working and driving movements of the Liebherr rail-road excavator. For more performance, the flow rate of the proven Liebherr variable displacement double pump has been increased to 2x220 l/min. In addition, a heavier counterweight has been designed to achieve the best load lift values with improved weight distribution and a more compact tail swing radius of 2,000 mm. While the A 922 Rail has an operating mass of 20,400 to 23,400 kg, the A 924 Rail is in a higher tonnage class with an operating mass of 21,800 to 25,000 kg. On both machines, the rail guide system is mounted on both sides of the undercarriage: During changeover to rail, the rail guide system is lowered axle by axle until the inner wheels of the twin tires are in contact with the track wheel and ensure the friction connection of the travel drive.
Comfortable double cab
The spacious double cab featuring standard roll over protective structure (ROPS) and a modern interior design offers the best conditions for comfortable, focused and productive work. Entrance lighting is provided to make accessing the cab easier. The usual generous use of glass and standard rear and side cameras provide an exceptional view of the working area and swing range. The touch-screen colour display used for display and operation purposes, as well as the other control elements on the console are all perfectly matched to one another to form the perfect unit.
Security systems direct from the manufacturer
Occupational safety is extremely important in track construction. Liebherr therefore offers their own safety systems which are perfectly tailored to the machine requirements. The safety technologies include load torque, height and sway limitation and the virtual wall.
Rail machine attachments and quick coupling systems
In order to meet the various construction site requirements economically and reliably, Liebherr offers a comprehensive portfolio of attachments for its railroad excavators and is presenting a selection of these at the IAF. Liebherr is showcasing a track grab that has been specially designed for the proven gripper mechanism of the GMZ 22. The attachment, which was developed specifically for Liebherr railroad excavators in close cooperation with machine operators, enables efficient and fast work with the track. Liebherr will also be exhibiting the parallel grab GMP 25, the sorting grab SG 20B universal shell, and the pallet fork SWA 33 FEM II. The exhibition appearance in the attachments sector will be rounded off by the tiltrotator TR 20B and a 2-in-1 bucket, as well as the ditch-cleaning bucket GRL 90.
The railroad excavators exhibited at the IAF are equipped with the fully hydraulic quick coupling system Solidlink. This includes the Solidlink 33-9, a model which adds further couplings to the fully automatic quick coupling system, with all the advantages. The expansion of the couplings to include a second high pressure circuit also allows the use of hydraulic attachments such as tamping equipment in rail construction, mulchers with flaps or Liebherr stick extensions. The Solidlink fully hydraulic quick coupling system allows attachments to be changed quickly and safely from the operator's cab.
